new facebook privacy (or lack thereof)

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

With the firestorm of criticism in the tech world over the privacy changes on facebook this week I thought I would put up a quick little guide for those not aware of how to fix the privacy issue.

Listening to TWiT this week, there was a great discussion of the effect and implications of these new  privacy settings.  An example of the effects of this change is that the founder of facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, had all his personal photos on facebook shared with the public.

Last week facebook prompted everyone to update their privacy settings with their ‘handy’ little form.  The problem is, if you are one of the many people who never manually set their privacy settings then all your activity on facebook will be turned public if you just click through the form without changing anything.

Go to your privacy settings here.

Go through each section of the privacy page to check and make sure your settings are what you want them to be.

One point of emphasis is that the applications on facebook have an level of access to your information that is staggering.  The base privacy settings do not apply to your applications at all.  The scarier part of this situation is that even if you do not have any applications on your profile, companies can get your information from your friends’ applications!

I found out this information listening to TWiT yesterday when they talked about the ACLU app on facebook, ‘What Do Quizzes Really Know About You?‘.  It is a bit heavy-handed but gets the point across.

While I am not happy with the latest developments from facebook, I am somewhat stuck on facebook because all my friends/family are on there.  So I am removing all applications from my account and am blocking all my data from being shared with my friends’ applications.  I’d rather not be inundated with marketing from companies that I had no idea were getting my information.

new hard drive

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

I had always thought that you couldn’t format an external USB hard drive with simple tools before now.  I thought USB didn’t allow you the base drive access required to deal with partitions.  Well,  I reinstalled XP on my aging laptop two days ago and in the initial format process I didn’t realize that my 1TB external hard drive was attached by USB and wiped the partition data from the drive.

I immediately downloaded a data recovery program but it’s a simple program and all it does is a one-to-one copy.  That 1TB is my only drive of that size or larger, so I’m scouting newegg for a new external hard drive.

I’m ordering a Lacie 1TB drive.  I’m spending a little more to get the pretty package, but I also think Lacie uses higher quality parts in their drives than bargain brands.

apple problems?

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

lately I’ve started to see more and more microsoft problems creeping into apple products. For example, with the release of iTunes 7.x a list of problems and complaints have arisen from the apple loving masses. In the past few months a list of bugs and exploits have been discoverd in OS X.

The special magic that has protected apple’s products is starting to wear off. Is this due to Apple’s push for more marketshare, their switch to Intel-based computers, or Apple just getting sloppy with their code?

If this trend continues and Microsoft is getting more secure, Apple may start having more trouble selling customers on the idea that Macs are so much more secure than PCs.

News updates

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2005

First off, this week started off the ScreenSavers with a couple repeat episodes, so I will wait until they get back to regular airings to begin my little observations.

On CNet’s website they have a story about our favorite music download service allofmp3.com. In case you haven’t heard ofallofmp3.com, it is a site based in Russia that allows it’s users to download ‘legal’ songs for a price of $.02 per megabyte. The site allows you to choose the bitrate so that you can have the quality you desire and you pay the same rate whatever bitrate you choose. So the average song costs anywhere from $.04 to $.10 depending on the quality. This is a much cheaper option than most online stores in the U.S. offering songs for $.99 a song.

The question has always been out there as to whether downloading these songs were legal or not. Well, apparently it isn’t illegal. The site which features the broadest range of music online for ‘legal’ downloads include such artists as The Beatles which have not allowed online downloading of their music yet. The Moscow City Police have recommended to the city prosecutor that they should press charges of copyright infringment. So if you want your cheap mp3′s you need to get them soon before they get shut down, which seems inevitable.

A company has begun a new idea in dating, purchasing time with an attractive woman(women) to help you meet more women. The idea comes from wingwomen.com, a site which allows you to book time with one or multiple women to go out to clubs or bars to help you meet other women. Their idea is pretty simple. Women want what they can’t have, and when a woman sees a man with a couple other women having a good time, then she believes there must be something really good about that guy and that maybe she should give that guy a chance. So far, this is a new venture in New York City and they are currently looking at expanding into other cities. The company charges $50 per hour per woman.
